Where the money goes.

  1. 01A broker pays COVRA Brokers pay COVRA to receive enquiries. Those payments go through Stripe, our payment provider, and 1% is set aside for carbon removal.
  2. 02Stripe Climate pools it Stripe Climate adds our contribution to those of other businesses around the world. One small business can’t fund a new technology, but many together can.
  3. 03Frontier buys carbon removal Frontier, Stripe’s team of science and commercial experts, uses the money to buy permanent carbon removal from companies developing new ways to do it.
  4. 04What that looks like Two examples Stripe gives: Climeworks captures carbon dioxide straight from the air and stores it underground in rock, and Charm Industrial turns plant material into bio-oil and injects it deep underground.

Why carbon removal.

Carbon removal means taking carbon dioxide out of the air and storing it permanently. The technology exists, but it’s new, small and expensive.

Most new technology starts out that way. Early customers help bring the cost down, as they did with solar panels. That’s the idea behind Stripe Climate: many businesses each putting in a little, early.

COVRA is a small business, so our 1% is a small amount. We’d rather start now than wait until it’s a large one.

What we don’t claim.

A contribution, and nothing more than that.

  • Not carbon neutral We don’t claim that COVRA is carbon neutral or net zero.
  • Not an offset The contribution doesn’t cancel out anyone’s emissions: not ours, a broker’s or a business’s. It helps new carbon removal technologies grow.
  • No guaranteed result Stripe funds a range of early projects, and says some might deliver results and others might fail.
